Good hotel, perfect location, dumb rules

Hotel was nice and clean with all services like a good hotel should have. But I went with as two couples, so technically the common space for us is either the lobby or the pool area. We went to the pool to have some drinks of our own but they were chasing us away, saying that we can't have drinks there and so. The rules at the pool area clearly showed that food or drinks in the pool isn't permitted, which we weren't doing but how is it wrong having a drink and eating some food at the provided coffee table?
