Know what to expect and you will have a great time
Knowing it is a remote location, a visitor should know better than complain about everything being so far away (read: do your homework before you travel!!).
About the resort: Its 500m from the stunning InterContinental, by the sea and has its own private beach (and pool). The garden-view bungalow though nothing fancy was bright and clean. And air-conditioner was a much appreciated mod-con. I had a malfunctioning shower head, but before I even said anything, room service came and replaced it. Breakfast was simple - does the job. Staff were all very lovely and attentive - most speak very little English but they will try hard to help.
The area is REALLY REALLY quiet - all the attractions are a distance away so either hire a scooter or join a tour. There were few places to eat nearby, I recommend the smaller ones that are more "mum's kitchen" type restaurants, which are authentic and cheap.
I wish there was a kettle, cup and saucer, so I can make coffee (I'm a coffee snob and bring my own grind everywhere) and enjoy it while reading my book in the room. And lucky I brought my own hair-dryer as it's not supplied. Other than that and the incredibly hot days, I have no complaints about Am Samui!
