we stayed one night in the ekkamon apartment in phuket town. we chose this accommodation primary on price and it's proximity to the bus station. the ekkamon 'mansion' (as the signs say when you arrive) is a fine accommodation for the price. the room had a good hot shower, tv, good bed, surprisingly nice furniture, and most importantly air conditioning! the room was clean and everything in it worked properly. very good value on the room itself for the price.
a couple of drawbacks.... one is that the rooms are intermixed with other rooms that people apparently live in which creates a bit of a different atmosphere. two is that the walls are also quite thin so it was easy to hear noise from other rooms like tvs, people talking, and the manager's child. neither of these were a problem as no one seemed to stay up late or be overtly noisy. we both slept fine. they did give the place a bit of a different feel than your typical hotel.
with this in mind i thought the accommodation was fine for a night, but would probably not want to stay much more than that. for that matter, i wouldn't bother staying in phuket town more than a night anyway as there are much more interesting things to see and do elsewhere in thailand.
