a slipshod flophouse

From the git-go, I did not expect much staying at a low budget hotel, but this place left me speechless and definitely deserves a review since it has outdone itself in treading down every aspect of the hospitality business. People at the front desk radiate indifference if not downright hostility and act like they should be back harvesting cashew nuts on their home farm in India instead of serving customers. In addition to that, they hardly spoke any English so I literally had to draw pictures in order to somehow get through to them. Bed linen last washed probably under British rule, black fungus on bathroom walls, mosquitoes everywhere because of missing window parts (had to buy a 2 meter piece of mosquito mesh to cover the hole in the wall my room had in lieu of a window to keep them from sucking me dry), and a thick cloud of cigarette smoke in the corridor every evening - those are just a few possible problems to point out. No refrigerator in the room contrary to what was advertised, cockroaches the size of a well-fed mouse strolling around with dignity… When a fluorescent lamp went out in my room, I had to ask them twice before someone nonchalantly turned up to take a look, even then they sad they would MAY BE fix it tomorrow: had to use my electrician skills to avoid sitting in the darkness for the rest of my stay. The WiFi connection was practically non-existent: presumably undergoing what was presented like a never-ending repair, it was so unreliable that I could not check the train timetables for a few days... All in all, not worth even a third of what they charge for a night, it is miraculous how they stay in business, most probably because of their location in the middle of Chinatown and the rather peculiar clientele (largely from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka etc ) they cater to…
