Great location, hit-and-miss customer service

We stayed at Thiwson Beach for a week, and after riding motor scooters all over the island we know this place has one of the best locations on the island. It’s east-facing, so you don’t get sunsets. But the view of the islands and limestone in the bay are beautiful. The resort isn’t on a sandy beach exactly - there’s a rock wall, a small drop-off, and then a rocky beach. At low tide you can walk to the left along a very long, sandy beach. Some trash, though - it’s mostly nice.
The food at the restaurant is very, very good, and they offer a happy hour. The massages we got were excellent. They arranged motor bikes for us for a very reasonable price - better than the place up the street. We paid 200 baht each for half-day, which was 6 hours. That’s plenty of time to explore - we spent a day exploring the north end, and a day exploring the south end. The roads on Koh Yao Yai are not crowded, so it’s easy even for beginners who’ve never used a motor bike before.
Customer service was inconsistent. Half of the time no one seemed to care or want to accommodate our request, and half the time they were great at answering questions and solving problems. This is a family-run place, and they don’t seem all that interested in getting to know the customers. They’re not unfriendly, just not always very accommodating. It might be a language barrier - we tried to joke with the restaurant staff, but they were a bit stiff.
All in all, this is a great place to stay - there aren’t many places like this on Koh Yao Yai. There are places to walk to nearby for good food and drinks, and a little mini-market that the resort owns right up the hill, so it’s easy to get things you need.
