gorgeous hotel

we splurged and stayed at layana during the low season for 2 nights. the hotel is gorgeous--pristine grounds and facilities. the food is generally very good but quite expensive (also, the chicken was continuously overcooked). we spent more $$ at this hotel in 2 days than we spent in a week elsewhere in thailand. our one complaint was that it was a little stuffy-- this is definitely a 5 star place, and it feels like it. if you are more laid-back, like we are, the constant attention from the staff was a little much. we had reserved 2 nights at another hotel on ko lanta after our stay at layana, and when that hotel came to pick us up, the layana manager asked what they had done wrong. this left a sour taste in our mouths and made us feel uncomfortable for simply wanting to explore a different part of the island. i would recommend this hotel, but only if you have a big budget.
