I spent a long weekend at Baan Krating, staying in Room 317 'delux pavillion'. 317 is on the 2nd story of the pavillion buildings so I almost felt like I was amongst the tree tops. At sunset I sat in the deck chair, on my spacious balcony, and could hear the relaxing sounds of waves crashing against the shore, crickets and birds (hence the luxury camping feel).
The room was very nice, lots of space and ceiling to floor glass on two sides so I looked out over the trees, very clean, great bathroom with good pressure and hot water. Internet expensive at 100 baht for an hour. Good selection of TV channels. I guest the standard rooms are the older wooden bungalows, but there were several closer to the beach than my pavillion room that would have been nice for just one person or a couple.
The water was a little rough on Naiharn, Kata and Karon beaches, but since the Krating beach is so small it was OK to swim in for most of the day (not so much at low tide as it was a little hairy to get past the rocks). There was OK snorkeling just off the beach with quite a few fish to be seen and a bit of coral.
I hired a motorbike from the shop before Phuket Yacht Club, if you don't you'll end up being too isolated and reliant on the Baan Krating transfer to Naiharn (every 2 hours), or around a 20 minute walk so doable, but much more convenient to have a motorbike to zip around on.
Service was very good with all the staff friendly and eager to please.
