Great Deal in central Chiang Mai
Had to make a short, one-night trip to Chiang Mai and chose Viang Thapae Resort for price and location – walking distance to restaurants, etc., on Loi Kroh Road. What a great discovery – it's a well-appointed small hotel, super-clean and comfortable double room with firm (but not hard) king-size bed, and A/C that works well (and can be adjusted not to blow right on you). Good size bathroom with adequate counter space and towel racks. The usual issue that the hot water in the shower could be hotter and none in the sink for shaving, but that's true of all of Thailand, in my experience.
Great breakfast with wide range of Western and Asian options, plenty of fresh fruit and strong coffee, all overlooking a pool and fountain with hanging orchids. Nice wake-up call!
In room safe is a bit small, but front desk has larger storage. Nice pool in the center of the three wings forming a triangle; sun deck and exercise equipment on the top floor.
Not to gush, but this is a wee gem of a hotel, as good or better than others in the neighborhood at twice the price. Location is also walking distance from Tha Phae Gate, night bazaar, etc, etc.
I'll be back, for certain!
