It wasn't that there was anything wrong with the room (apart from lacking in space for me to open out my case), it was clean and nicely decorated. It was the location of the room within the hotel that was the problem. The room was one of seven rooms located in a car park down some steps from the hotel lobby. The exit from the car park was metres away from my door so every passing moped would disturb me. In fact, the opening of said door was a noisy operation and was the first thing to disturb me. A room on an upper floor might have been fine. The hotel location is good, around 50 metres from exit from Thailand and very close to the market. Songthaews run from the bus station to the border, stopping right outside the hotel. It might be worth mentioning that, as Mae sai is not a popular tourist destination, very few people speak any English, including hotel staff.
