I don't mind basic, but hate dirty rooms. Dust, dirty walls, soap from the last guests still in the bathroom. Quite a nice location, but lazy cleaners.

Our stay in Tambai was different to most of the rest of our journey round Thailand. It was a fair walk into the town but through a lovely area dominated by the towering jungle coated rock outcrops. Every person we passed smiled and waved. Thais are a friendly lot in general but these were even more welcoming. We were there during Songkran and walking round town was an experience we wont forget in a long time, involving a LOT of water and smearings of mud and coloured pastes...loads of fun. We found Phang-nga hot and a bit grubby with few places to escape the heat but much less touristy and therefor more authentic than most other Thai cities we visited. We walked up to Chedi Khao Lang Bart and had a picnic in the cool breeze overlooking the town. The sounds of Songkran celebrations and children's laughter floated up to us filtered by the forest. One of the highlights of our visit.
