Hip but could be hipper

We did a fair bit of research before we committed to staying here. We wanted to visit Phi Phi but wanted to be away from the main town, all the loud parties and an awful lot of the clientele! And we nailed it, Hip is located at the far end of the island, just 5 minutes away from town on a longtail boat. The beach is clean, there's a few restaurants and bars and the snorkelling is great (saw a shark!). Yes, to get up to Hip there are 100 stairs...but really, if you can't climb them, you're doing something wrong in life and we actually learned to enjoy the little work out after a Pad Thai and a Chang! Once you're at Hip though, it goes downhill a little after all that uphill. It's basically unfinished, and not afraid to show it. The reception is unpainted and looks more like a booking counter at a ferry terminal, whilst the restaurant area almost looks like an afterthought and again, you're surrounded with unfinished walls, outbuildings and kitchen area. It's a shame as it wouldn't take much to sort out. The rooms are actually pretty good though, they are spacious with decent AC and nice hot showers. There was a lot of construction work going on on new bungalows but it wasn't too bad (although they should have been focussing on finishing that restaurant area). finally, breakfast in the morning was a random affair. we made a few different requests over our 3 mornings and most of them never showed up. sometimes fresh fruit came out for one of us, but not the other. Sometimes the omelette would be plain, other times it would be bursting with vegetables. All in, I think we'd maybe stay again, mainly because of location, but they could definitely help themselves by spending a day or two finishing the place off.
