Paradise... at a cost

The Am Samui is on the quietest side of the island and is (mostly) peaceful. There is not a lot close by save a few restaurants, but that was what we were looking for. You can hire scooters for 200 a day though to get around the island easily. The cabins/rooms are comfortable although some of them have outdoor showers/bathrooms. There were lots of mosquitos at first, and always lizards in the room. They also didnt change the sheets until the third day when we had to ask. The included breakfast and the wifi was good. The pool is small but lovely with a great view over the beach. The beach is rocky so swimming is not really an option, but one can walk along the beach (though there is a lot of washed up rubbish :( ) It is not as well maintained as more popular beaches, but that is the compromise for the price. The sun sets over the ocean here which is great to watch on a clear evening.
The main issue we had was with the hotel's policy of letting anyone wander in at any time. Although this shows how people do want to come to this nice spot, it is a pain if you are staying here. One afternoon we were relaxing by the pool when a large group of 12 swarmed the place, with 4 kids and adults jumping in the pool and making a lot of noise with no regard for others. We left after 30 minutes and then they really took it over for the rest of the afternoon! This is also probably the reason why the restaurant also slaps 17% on bill for 'service' and 'government tax' even if you are staying there, making a nothing special menu quite expensive. This is not the case everywhere. This hotel would be much better if exclusive, but the price/location means the owners will always probably be looking for whatever they can make from random people. Shame.
