I should give my stay a 1 star rating. But I feel bad for the nice staff...
I opted to check out early after one night, as this was the path of least resistance. In my 25 years of travels this has only happened a handful of times. I do not do this lightly.
At check in I was presented with a list of items in the room to sign off on, as if I need to steal the teacup and laundry bag or slippers. Then I found out the internet connection in the entire resort was down. Fantastic. The air con was utterly useless and sounded like the engine room on a ship. The staff spoke minimal English and made communicating my concerns extremely vexing.
The room itself was small, dark, and reaked of air freshener. They also had dozens of candle-heated fragrant oil burning in the room, in all the hallways, so you can imagine the dense odor... One could wonder what those scents were meant to mask.
The morning after, I asked to please have a different room as I felt my nose was running and I had a massive headache from the strong smells, and they actually presented me with the neighboring room with connecting doors...! Or I could pay for an upgrade in a near deserted hotel in low season. At that point words failed me and I decided not to fight it and just leave.
Other than that, the location is fantastic and the staff very sweet and they tried their best. Unfortunately I cannot spend my vacation time managing a poorly managed hotel.
