Nice and peaceful guesthouse along the river.

3-minute motorcycle/songthaew ride from the River Kwae Station. Stayed in one of the two "river-view" rooms, which are a bit more expensive than the bungalows, but well worth it especially if you're a couple. The room has a balcony that faces the river. Choices for breakfast are western except for rice-soup (khaaw-tom). Staff are kind and helpful. The hotel offers a one-way 160-baht mini-bus connection (about 2.5 hours) to Bangkok's Victory Monument or Khao San.

OK if on a budget
